Handling medium format film is much easier than 35mm-you can extact the film and put it into a canister easily due to the larger size, it's more forgiving to scan, you can use a decent $300 flatbed scanner like an Epson to load the images, and because of the large negative format film grain becomes a mostly moot issue below 1600 ISO. I shot with Ilford Delta 3200 at anywhere from 800 to 3200 ISO, and if exposed right, you don't see much film grain at all. You can easily out-class just about all DSLRs on the market with a good scanner (I used an Epson 4xxx series) and get 4000x4000 pixel images out of it. I sold it to fund my Epson R-D1 purchase, and have regretted getting rid of it. Somewhere on the route to a digital M (The Mamiya is mentionedīecause it looks tempting and is medium format).Īnd it was the most rewarding film experience I'd had. other threads here) initially I agree, but I want to start Sure quite a few of you would recommend me to stay away from film I bet you have experiences with these cameras, and I'd be happy if Similar kits, but I can't find any (in Norway). Ok, have mercy with me for asking rookie film questions it's justĪ few months ago I almost bought a M6 with 35f2+50f2, but it For anyone still focus on using film, Mamiya 7 seemed to be a better bargain and better option if larger print size picture required. But I do keep my Leica M film bodies, but use only M8 now. Since I moved to digital, I sold 2 Mamiya 7 and 5 lenses, with the panoramic adapter, and did not miss it. It is something Leica should build for such size, but may be it will be 3X the weight. I do not like its built quality, particular when ou mount and unmount the lens, you can clearly see the camera joint is slightly distorted, but since the camera and lens is in general very light weight, I do not see this a particular problem. I love my Mamiya 7 and for its large film size which can render nice size picture, but the lens is not as fast and contrast as Leica, but the size may well compensate it for some.
